WHY DEVELOP CONSCIOUSNESS?
Blog
Our brain cannot tell the difference between events in the real world and those in our imagination. This has been proven by numerous scientific experiments. We believe in the images and scenes that we create in our minds. Most of the time, each person lives in an imaginary world created by their mind. In other words, we perceive our illusions as 'real'. The spiritual nature of a person does not perceive or interpret; it simply sees everything as it really is and knows the true meaning and significance of all things.
However, this is merely our individual interpretation of reality. Therefore, it is believed that everyone has their own truth — after all, everyone sees things differently. For this reason, wise people say that everything depends on perception. However, the spirit teaches a person to gain a deeper understanding — not just to change their perception and interpretation, but to learn to see the truth. The human mind and brain are responsible for perception — they receive and process information from what we see, hear and perceive through physical sensations. It analyses both external and internal information (emotions and sensations), reinterprets it, forms opinions and assigns meaning and value to things. It also draws conclusions and organises them into a system of thought. The spiritual nature of a person does not perceive or interpret; it simply sees everything as it really is and knows the true meaning and significance of all things.
How often has it happened to each of us that we assessed situations in a certain way, only for them to take on a completely different meaning later on, often the opposite? Sometimes, when we learn new information from others, our perception of situations can change completely.
Our perception of situations from the past changes over time. When we remember these situations, we almost always perceive them differently, which changes our thoughts and emotions about them. In fact, we change our perception of what actually happened hundreds of times without even noticing! We attach importance to some things, then to others. Each time, this becomes our 'reality'. However, each event can have only one true meaning and thousands of variations in perception and interpretation.
We can easily mistake a lie for the truth or attach meaning and value to any illusion we desire. This is how the unconscious and confused human mind works. Nowadays, many aspects of modern life contribute to this by bombarding the masses with false and unnecessary information, further confusing people's consciousness. One of the most difficult lessons for humans on Earth is to understand how the ego creates illusions and endows them with reality, and to learn to be aware of this process. Here, we learn to distinguish truth from lies, to recognise our illusions, and to realise that we create our 'true reality' out of emptiness and illusions. By developing consciousness, a person can free themselves from illusions and the problems they cause.
It is the spirit that teaches a person to distinguish illusion from truth. According to A Course in Miracles, this is the fundamental and ultimately the only lesson for a person: to understand that only truth is real and that everything else is meaningless (p. 287, ch. 14, II.2). Only by listening to their inner spirit can people learn to see the truth in everything. First, they learn to recognise the difference between truth and falsehood, then to doubt their veracity and finally to disbelieve in and not attach value to the 'empty' and false. Thus, human consciousness reaches a new level, seeing true reality in everything.
By developing consciousness, a person not only gets rid of illusions, but also of suffering. After all, it is illusions that cause pain. Where there is truth, there is joy. If something causes you suffering, pain or sadness, it means you have believed in an illusion and given it reality. Consider what you have given excessive or false importance to, and you will find the source of your distress. Now, with your new-found consciousness, you can choose what to believe in: an illusion that causes suffering or the truth that brings liberation.
The truth is easy to recognise — it always brings joy, lightness and love. The difficulty for humans is believing in it. The ego controls the mind and cherishes its illusions, actively defending them. However, it is always our choice whether to develop awareness or continue listening to our ego. As people develop their consciousness, they begin to realise this choice and make it consciously. By listening to the voice of the spirit, we can always choose truth. This is life in the reality of the spirit on earth. It is a completely different life — a life without suffering, a life of joy and love!
